PRESS RELEASE
AN EDUCATIONAL PROJECT WAS PRESENTED IN THE PROVINCE OF ALESSANDRIA TO ENGAGE STUDENTS IN THE WORLD OF THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY
This real experience involved a tour of a plant in Alessandria organised by the Province of Alessandria together with Riccoboni Holding
“What happens to our waste? From production to final disposal” is the title of the educational project for secondary schools promoted by the Province of Alessandria together with Riccoboni Holding.
On 22 March 2024, upper secondary school classes from Galileo Galilei College in Alessandria followed by those from the Barletti Institute in Ovada went on guided educational tours, lasting 1 hour and a half accompanied by an instructor and a technician, of the “Ri-Habitat” non-hazardous special waste disposal plant in Sezzadio.
This educational project has the following goals:
- to introduce students to the world of the circular economy in an engaging way based on participation through a real experience involving a tour of a plant in Alessandria;
- to see how waste is managed when it cannot be sent for recycling, with a focus on reliability and safety to protect the environment;
- to raise awareness about the life-cycle of the goods produced and which we use every day, in line with the guidelines on “Responsible Consumption and Production” of the 2030 Agenda.
During the entire tour, students were able to interact with the plant technician and instructor to discuss issues, ask questions and make observations. The educational approach will be based on participation, with learning by doing, a teaching methodology put forth by the philosopher and educator, John Dewey, which considers experience as a key factor that enables an individual’s education, on all levels of social interaction, from school to work.
“In our current era, when environmental challenges are threatening our future, educating and engaging young people is essential for promoting a positive change”, explained the Chairman of the Province, Enrico Bussalino. “Thanks to our collaboration with Riccoboni, we have been able to launch this educational project which actively involves secondary school students, offering them a first-hand experience at one of the local companies involved in waste management. Through this practical experience, we can bring young people closer to environmental issues, encouraging them to become actors for change in protecting our planet”.
“We supported the organisation of this educational project right from the outset together with the Province of Alessandria”, explained Nicole Riccoboni, the Special Project Manager at Riccoboni Holding. “It aims to provide students with the information required for their education and for their environmental awareness and training. We will let them examine issues relating to the RiHabitat plant, seeking to improve their knowledge of special waste, how much is produced and how it is managed: recycling and final disposal. We will address the criteria for choosing where to build a recycling or disposal plant. We will highlight the journey of waste on its way to the landfill site, which waste can enter the plant, what happens when waste arrives at the plant, and what it means to “cultivate” a landfill site. We will analyse how the land is guaranteed to be safe once the waste is in place, and how internal and external checks are ensured as well as the aquifer monitoring plan. Training will also be provided directly in the field to try to spark aspiring students’ interest in courses about studying and protecting the environment”.
In April and May, another two days will be dedicated to the educational project at RiHabitat with other schools in the Province of Alessandria.
